Looking at the floor of the old woolshed at Nilpena Station with Ross Fargher on a Nilpena Ediacara Fossil Tour

NILPENA EDIACARA TOURS

A local story of international significance

The Nilpena fossil beds are the single most important Ediacaran fossil site on the planet. These ancient seafloors are an active research site uncovering the evolution of first animal life on earth.

Hear the story behind their chance discovery, research that attracts NASA funding and the creation of Nilpena-Ediacara National Park on the remote Flinders Ranges ‘Nilpena’ cattle station of Ross and Jane Fargher, owners of the Prairie Hotel and Nilpena Ediacara Tours.

Our tours are an exploration not only of exceptional Ediacara fossils, but also of a rich local cultural history and pastoral heritage. With a long family history in the area, our recollections, stories and experiences add recent context to a 550 million year journey from the explosion of animal life to their discovery and protection.

You've Got to See This!

Do the tour. No words can capture what touching the impression of a soft bodied multi celled organism from 550 million years ago in granite like rock is like.

The highlight was the fossil tour which not only explained about the fossils in the property but also station life.

In regards to the tour of the fossil fields with Ross Fargher, this was very special in every way. Ross’ personal experience and knowledge were remarkable. And the fossil site is beyond description.

Ross delivered in such a delightfully low key, but exhaustively knowledgeable way. Not only on the fossils, but also the station and the region. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
